I became a Tegan and Sara fan, like many people, after hearing their songs on "Grey’s Anatomy." It’s wild to think about just how long ago that was. To celebrate their new album and memoir, I’m going to share my top five Tegan and Sara songs ever.
5. "Hold My Breath Until I Die"
Tegan and Sara’s newest album, “Hey I’m Just Like You,” is fully of teen angst, which makes sense because all the songs contain lyrics that they wrote in high school. I think all the songs do a great job of capturing the intense emotions you experience during that time. My favorite song on that album is “Hold By Breath Until I Die.” So pain. So angst. So perfect.
Favorite Lyrics:
“Late at night, when your words are eating me alive
Does it make you sad to leave me here like that?”
4. "Living Room"
Listening back to their first albums, it’s amazing to hear how their sound has changed. I love this song because it has a folksy sound to it, while still having those emotional Tegan and Sara lyrics. Some might call the lyrics repetitive, but they just work.
Favorite Lyrics: “I'd spend all night losing sleep
I'd spend the night and I lose my mind”
3. Back In Your Head
I love the hoppy, upbeat feel of this song, even though the lyrics are so emotional and almost desperate. To me, it’s about being in a relationship, but it’s starting to fray at the edges, and it feels like you're losing the connection to that person. It’s the perfect song to bop around to, while also, maybe, crying.
Favorite Lyrics:
“Build a wall of books between us in our bed
Repeat, repeat the words that I know we both have said”
2. Boyfriend
One of my favorite things about Tegan and Sara is that they never hide their queerness, and they let it come out in their lyrics. This one is so great because it describes that feeling of having a best friend who treats you like a romantic partner, but then in public, is with someone else. I think it’s super relatable. I feel like this song mayyyybe influenced, or at least has similar vibes to “Curious” by Hayley Kiyoko. Favorite Lyrics: "I let you take advantage cause it felt so good I blame myself for thinking we both understood"
1. Where Does The Good Go
How could I not put this as number one? It’s the first Tegan and Sara song I ever heard, and it was love at first listen. It’s just SO good. They came in SO hard in that "Grey’s Anatomy" episode, and no one was ready. I remember downloading it off LimeWire and putting it on my first ever MP3 player, putting in my earbuds and putting it on repeat. The song still hits all the emotions all those years later.
Favorite Lyrics:
“Where do you go with your broken heart in tow?
What do you do with the left over you?”
BRB I’ll be listening to their whole discography quietly sobbing. Thank you, Tegan and Sara for so many years and so many tunes. p.s. If you get the chance to see them live, do it! They're amazing.
